The other side has 2 smaller knobs for locking the ballhead and the rotation. The quick release is strong. The shaft in the middle of the tripod can be inverted so you can do macro photography with the camera extremely close to the ground. You can also remove one of the tripod legs to turn it into a monopod. You can attach the ball head directly to the monopod leg, or you can use the shaft to increase the length.
